    About Kevin McManus

A fifth generation Kansas Citian, Kevin McManus represents the 36th District in the Missouri House of Representatives, which encompasses south Kansas City, Missouri. In 2010, Kevin was elected as a first-time candidate through an aggressive grassroots campaign and was re-elected in 2012 and 2014.

    As a State Representative

In the legislature, Kevin serves as a chairman of the Kansas City regional Bipartisan Caucus, which brings legislators of both parties together to work on issues that benefit the Kansas City area. According to the Kansas City Star, Kevin has been a “bright light” in his caucus, “sponsoring good legislation” for our city and state. In 2014, Kevin passed legislation that, if approved in the state of Kansas, will end the tax credit and job poaching "border war" between Kansas and Missouri. Kevin has been a leading voice for passing ethics and campaign finance reforms aimed at increasing transparency and accountability in state government. He has sponsored legislation that would ensure swift prosecution of criminals who use a firearm in the commission of a crime. Kevin has also passed legislation to support Kansas City’s free health clinic and fought for the passage of legislation to fund early childhood education.

    As a Kansas Citian

At home, Kevin has been active in the South Kansas City Alliance, a coalition of neighborhood organizations, civic, educational and faith-based institutions, non-profits, and businesses dedicated to bringing about a unified vision for south Kansas City. He serves as co-chair of the SKC Alliance’s Strategic Planning Committee and has helped lead the group’s effort to define priorities and strategies for improving the quality of life in south Kansas City for future generations. In addition to his legislative duties, Kevin is an attorney in private practice focused on business law and civil litigation in state and federal court. He is a member of the Metropolitan Bar Association, as well as the Missouri and Kansas Bars. In 2012, the Missouri Bar awarded Kevin a legislative award for his work to improve the administration of justice in the state of Missouri.

    Personal life

Kevin graduated from Rockhurst High School in 1997. He earned his undergraduate degree in Government (summa cum laude) from the University of Notre Dame in 2001 and his law degree (with honors) from St. Louis University School of Law in 2006. In law school, Kevin served as an editor of the law review and was a member of the Public Interest Law Group, through which he provided pro bono legal services for those in need. Prior to his legal career, Kevin was a researcher at the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C., where he advocated for policies that benefited working families. Kevin is a candidate for the City Council in the 6th District, the same district where he was born and raised. Kevin resides in south Kansas City with his wife Alejandra (“Alex”) and their son.
