A fourth-generation Kansas Citian, Quinton grew up in the city’s urban core. As a child, he moved often, sometimes staying with family or friends, and residing briefly in a motel. However, like his mother and sisters, he did not allow these set-backs to keep him from working hard. Quinton learned as a young man the values of hard work, employment, and perseverance in building a stable and successful life for himself and his family. Instilled with those values, he was able to earn academic scholarships to The Barstow School, Washington University, and law school at Cornell University.
After graduating from Cornell, Quinton returned home to Kansas City. He first worked for a federal judge and practiced business law. At age 28, Quinton was appointed to a law professorship at the University of Kansas, making him one of the youngest tenure-track law professors in the United States, and the youngest in the school’s history. An accomplished business lawyer and teacher, Quinton continues to work as an attorney. He also volunteers extensively with inner city schools and organizations, such as Operation Breakthrough and De LaSalle Academy, and in area prisons mentoring young men returning to the Kansas City area.

Quinton Lucas - KU Law Professor

Quinton also is involved in city government. Mayor Sly James appointed him to the Kansas City Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA), where he works to support job growth and development. In 2013, James also appointed Quinton to the commission assigned the task of reviewing the City’s charter. Kansas City voters approved all of the commission’s recommendations that were on the ballot in 2014.
From childhood to this day, Quinton is inspired by the example of his mother, who currently works for UMKC. She rode city buses with, or drove her children around Kansas City to get them all to work, as well as herself. He is also inspired by his stepfather, who has been a barber on 67th & Prospect for decades.
Quinton is a candidate for City Council in Kansas City, Missouri, 3rd District At-Large, a council seat that will be vacated by Melba Curls due to term limits. He is running for this position to create new (and reinforce existing) policies that create high quality jobs in our community; to improve public services, and to ensure that basic maintenance and improvements to our infrastructure remain a priority.
